Canon EOS M video shows off touchscreen UI, accessories, color variants (updated: link to sample images)

Welcome to the land of good complexions, whiny mopeds and surprisingly early Canon hands-on videos. While most English-speaking journos have only been given the briefest glimpse of the new $800 mirrorless EOS M, Italian site PMStudioNews has posted a full hands-on video to YouTube. It shows a red variant of the 18-megapixel, APS-C shooter, in addition to the black and white models we've already seen, plus a beige leather case if you fast-forward around seven minutes. More importantly though, it shows off the touchscreen UI in some detail, including touch-to-shoot and a screen layout that looks quite different to what we've known from the button- and dial-heavy G1 X and its predecessors, and more like that of the Rebel T4i entry-level DSLR. Sure, it offers full manual control, but it also looks kinda fiddly -- something we'll look out for when it comes to review time in the Fall.

Update: Canon has produced some sample stills and videos to show what the camera can do. Also, a helpful reader just spotted that DigitalCameraWorld has posted a hands-on video too, and it's in English.

Hang Your Hat | I Am A Mess!

Greetings! Its been a few days since I?ve been able to blog, and boy have I missed it! I am so excited to share some pictures of my NEW HOME!

In case you missed it, here?s a little backstory on our move: Jason, Dylan and I own a house in Cartersville, Georgia, which is nice but nearly and hour from Jason?s work and the town is fairly limited in terms of entertaining a child day after day. We decided to move to a rental house in Smyrna, Georgia, which is closer to Jay?s work (less than ten minutes!) and rent out the house we own in Cartersville with the hope of eventually selling it. It was complicated to sort everything out, but we did, and so last month I took Dylan to New Hampshire to visit with my family while Jay coordinated and executed our move. We planned it this way because we knew it would be hard to do a move with Dylan underfoot and it would be less traumatic for him to leave his house if he had time away from it first.

All that is to explain how I found myself in the unconventional situation of getting off a plane in Atlanta and driving to a new house that had been fully organized and decorated without my two cents. I think most women would have a hard time having zero input into the look and feel of their house, but not me. I know my strengths and weaknesses and interior design in not a strength. Also, Jay enjoys the moving process and setting up a new house, so it worked out for both of us!

So now, I share with you snapshots of my new house just moments after I saw it for the first time. I?ll provide thoughts and commentary along the way.

First, the exterior front:

I love that we have a safe yard with nice green grass (so unlike our old house). I?m not an HGTV person so I apologize for using the wrong terminology, but there is a square concrete slab outside the back door that is perfect for setting up a water table (Dylan?s current favorite activity) because it reduces mud.

We are really in an ideal spot in the neighborhood because everything is right nearby. We can easily walk to the pool and tennis courts and the community also has a playground and lake for fishing, both of which are directly across from our house.

Back to the house. The first floor boasts a master bedroom, master bathroom, sitting area, dining area, half bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and a couple closets.

Jay surprised me with all new furniture in this room. If you had asked me if I wanted black chairs I would have said ?no,? but the second I saw them, I fell in love.

Across from the sitting area is a staircase and beyond that is the kitchen:

I?m so happy the cabinets are white! I love white in kitchens!

Jay designed the kitchen to look like a diner! Unfortunately, the retro diner-style table and chair set he ordered hasn?t been delivered yet, but I?ll show you the rest of the space:

Exiting the kitchen you can see the master bedroom on the opposite side of the house:

Jay had to merge two sets of furniture into the master bedroom, so one side has brown furniture and the other has black. This felt a little weird to me at first, but now that I?m used to it I think it works.

This is a classic example of how sometimes it better to just let one person do something rather than have a back and forth discussion, because if I had been a part of the move I know I would have made a big deal about not combining both sets of furniture and we probably would?ve ended up doing something drastic like selling it all off and buying a new bedroom set, but since I wasn?t there Jay just did what he felt like and I?m totally okay with it!

The upstairs holds Dylan?s room, the living room, an office/exercise/guest room, a storage room and a third bathroom. There?s also an open hallway that looks out over the bottom level.

The living room is large and very comfy. It feels like a cave.

There?s even a bar and sink in the corner.

I?ve been here a few days and have a few thoughts on the new house and the move in general:

1) There are a lot of things in this house that are similar to our old house, only better. I thought I would miss our old house more than I do. I am used to moving at this point in my life but I?m still surprised by how quickly I can move on from the place I last left.

2) Having Jay?s office so close to home is going to be so healthy for our family. Its been fun having him pop in and out during the day! He has much more flexibility with his schedule now and I can tell we will be seeing a lot more of each other, which is awesome!

3) Dylan likes it here. Jason filled the house with new toys and Dylan is still discovering them, but even more than that, you can tell that Jay designed it with Dylan?s needs and wants in mind. There are play areas all around and everything feels safe. He can navigate the stairs on his own and for whatever reason it just seems like he is safer here! Maybe it?s the layout?

4) The garage door is right off the kitchen so when I come home with groceries all I have to do is step out of my car and into the kitchen. At the old house I had a very long, steep flight of stairs. No stairs = luxurious. I used to put off buying heavy and/or bulky things like toilet paper and clothing detergent, but not anymore!

5) I love my husband. For reals. He did such an amazing job creating a warm, safe (again!) and fun house for our family! I?m looking forward to enjoying this space with him and Dylan. I?m also looking forward to having more to DO in this town!

Syria rebels seize Iraq border after deadliest day

Syrian rebels sought to seal off President Bashar al-Assad's embattled regime from the outside world by seizing border posts amid calls for protests nationwide Friday on "the Ramadan of victory."

Members of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) fought a raging battle with Syrian troops at the Bab al-Hawa border post with Turkey, an AFP photographer at the scene reported, addding that some 150 rebel fighters now controlled the crossing.

More than 300 people were killed across Syria on Thursday's deadliest day of the uprising now in its 17th month, as both China and Russia again dismayed the West by vetoing UN Security Council action against his regime for the third time.

Two days after rebels killed three of Assad's security chiefs including his brother-in-law, battles raged in the capital on Friday as the army said it had retaken the district of Midan from "terrorists," the term it uses for the rebels.

"Our brave army forces have completely cleaned the area of Midan in Damascus of the remaining mercenary terrorists and have reestablished security," state television said.

In Brussels, the European Union is preparing to freeze the assets of at least 26 Syrians close Assad and readying plans to board vessels and aircraft suspected of supplying weapons to his regime.

Syria on Friday began the first day of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan amid a security forces ultimatum to "cleanse Damascus of terrorists."

Activists have call for fresh anti-regime demonstrations after the regular weekly prayers under the slogan "The Ramadan of victory will be written in Damascus."

The army on Thursday resorted to heavy armour in the capital for the first time, using tanks against the rebels.

Assad also appeared in public for the first time since Wednesday's bombing, greeting his new defence minister on state television as he scrambled to shore up his battered prestige. His previous defence minister was killed by the bomb.

Violence is spiralling across the country, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which reported 302 people -- 98 Syrian soldiers, 139 civilians and 65 rebels -- killed Thursday nationwide.

At the Bab al-Hawa frontier crossing with Turkey, rebels sacked the Syrian border post, which was bloodstained and riddled with bullets.

They also looted Turkish lorries caught up in the battle.

Syrian soldiers had abandoned the site in the northwest province of Idlib, the scene of fierce fighting for months.

On Thursday, Iraq's deputy interior minister said the Free Syrian Army (FSA) had seized control of all crossings along their common border.

"All the border points between Iraq and Syria are under the control of the Free Syrian Army," Adnan al-Assadi told AFP by telephone.

Assadi said Iraqi border guards had seen FSA fighters seize a border outpost, detain a Syrian lieutenant colonel, and cut off his arms and legs.

"Then they executed 22 Syrian soldiers in front of the eyes of Iraqi soldiers."

The account of the killings could not be independently verified.

Meanwhile at the United Nations, Russia and China used their powers as permanent Security Council members to block resolutions on Syria for the third time in nine months.

UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, who had called on the council to impose "consequences" for the failure to carry out his peace plan for Syria, expressed disappointment that it had failed to reach agreement.

Washington condemned the "highly regrettable decision" of China and Russia to veto the UN resolution, with President Barack Obama's spokesman Jay Carney warning of "repercussions... in terms of how they're viewed by the Syrian people."

"There's no doubt that Syria's future will not include Bashar al-Assad. His days in power are numbered," he warned.

Washington said the Security Council had "utterly failed" on Syria and that it would now work outside the council to confront Assad's regime.

The White House also said that without the tougher mandate the vetoed text would have implied, there was no point in retaining UN military observers in Syria to monitor the non-implementation of Annan's plan by Assad's government.

Britain and Pakistan proposed rival resolutions extending the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) and, amid Council deadlock, a vote on both could be held on Friday, just hours before the end of the mission's 90-day mandate.

Russia said on Friday it backs an unconditional 45-day extension of the observer mission.

The upsurge in fighting has sparked a new exodus of refugees.

Nearly 19,000 Syrians poured into Lebanon, a security official told AFP in Beirut, while Iraqi officials said thousands of Iraqi refugee families had fled home from Syria.

The Syrian military had given residents 48 hours to leave areas of the capital, as security forces fought rebels pushing their "Damascus Volcano" offensive.

The authorities said state funerals would be held in Damascus on Friday for the three regime stalwarts killed in Wednesday's bombing.

Assad's brother-in-law and one of the Syrian security apparatus' hawks, Assef Shawkat, will be buried later in the western province of Tartus.

Daoud Rajha, who was defence minister, will be buried in his Christian town of Maalula near Damascus, and crisis cell chief Hassan Turkmani in northern Aleppo.

I have my Sony Home Theater System connected in the following way HDMI output to Samsung LCD 46' TV and the Audio of the cable box goes into the Sony Home Theater System and i have my computer and PS3 also connected to the Sony Home Theater System via HDMI. Swiss govt wants to end death penalty everywhere

GENEVA (AP) ? The Swiss government has reaffirmed its commitment toward seeking the abolition of the death penalty "throughout the world."

A Foreign Ministry statement Thursday says Switzerland firmly opposes the death penalty "in any and all circumstances" anywhere on the planet.

The statement came in response to Hamas authorities hanging three Palestinians on Tuesday who were convicted of murder in different cases, the sixth such executions in the Gaza Strip this year.

Switzerland called for a moratorium on capital punishment in the Gaza Strip, calling the death penalty "a violation of the most fundamental of human rights."

Canada: More like Mexico or Brazil?

An interesting economic report came my way recently. Last year, economists at the Inter-American Development Bank took a look at economies in Latin America and how they have fared since the 2008 financial crisis, and found that they broke down into two distinct groups.

The ?Mexico cluster? (Mexico and Caribbean countries) was more integrated with industrialized economies such as Europe and the US.

The ?Brazil cluster? (including many South American countries) exported primary commodities in large quantities to China.

You can guess what happened.

?Brazilian-type countries, being net commodity exporters, with low exposure to industrial countries in terms of exports of goods and services?and much to gain from larger investment demand in response to low world interest rates?are the clear winners. On the other hand, Mexican-type countries, mainly net commodity importers and highly exposed to trade in goods and services with industrial countries, are likely to face substantial challenges, in spite of the fact that they too stand to gain from lower world interest rates. Could we be witnessing the emergence of two regional blocs, represented by a Brazilian cluster and a Mexican cluster??

It?s an interesting bit of the backdrop to the debates over the proposed oil pipeline to the West Coast and the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.

And the issue goes beyond commodities to manufacturing, too. A few months ago, an executive from a large North American manufacturing company, which produces, among many other products, elevators, remarked that manufacturers no longer move production to China for lower wages (wages are going up there and are cheaper elsewhere in Asia.) They go, he said, because that?s where their customers are. China is on track to build several New York-sized cities in the coming decades, erecting thousands of skyscrapers, he said. ?Do you know how many elevators they?ll need??

The pressure for a Canadian economic pivot to Asia seems to be building, regardless of what Obama ultimately decides on Keystone XL.

Yahoo turns to Google's Mayer for revival

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc picked Google Inc's Marissa Mayer to become its new CEO, turning to an engineer with established Silicon Valley credentials to turn around the struggling former Internet powerhouse.

Mayer, 37, edged out front-runner and acting Chief Executive Ross Levinsohn to become Yahoo's third CEO in a year. She hopes to stem losses to Google and Facebook Inc - which her high-profile predecessors failed to do.

Her hiring signaled the Internet company is likely to renew its focus on Web technology and products rather than beefing up online content.

Mayer, Google's 20th employee and first female engineer, has led a number of its businesses, and was credited for envisioning the clean, simple Google search interface still in use today, a major selling point for Web surfers.

Also known for her love of fashion and a regular on the society pages, she joins the extremely thin ranks of female Silicon Valley CEOs and told Reuters that she was immediately interested when Yahoo's board reached out to her in mid-June.

"This is a very competitive and a tough space. I don't think that success is by any means guaranteed," she said. "My focus is always end-users, great technology and terrific talent."

Shares of Yahoo, worth less than half their value during its dotcom heyday, gained 2 percent to $15.97 in after-hours trading.

"It's a statement on Yahoo's part to go with a product-centric CEO choice. It's a very big commitment on the board's part to pursue a product-centric strategy," venture capitalist Marc Andreessen told the Fortune industry conference in Aspen, Colorado.

Tech companies can be turned around, he said, citing as an example Apple Inc, which had teetered on the brink of bankruptcy before Steve Jobs returned to the company he co-founded. "It's a big job that Marissa is stepping into," Andreessen said.

Mayer will start on Tuesday, when the company is scheduled to report its quarterly financial results, but she will not join the post-release conference call.

Last responsible for Google's local and location services, she joins fellow female tech chieftains Meg Whitman of Hewlett Packard Co, Virginia Rometty of International Business Machines Corp and Ursula Burns of Xerox Corp.

"A lot of people did not believe that Yahoo could get someone of the caliber of a Marissa Mayer to become the CEO at this stage," said S&P Capital IQ equity analyst Scott Kessler.

A YEAR OF TURMOIL

But Mayer's ascension comes as her profile at Google appeared to have diminished in recent months. Shortly after Larry Page took over the helm from Eric Schmidt, she was excluded from a group of top executives reporting directly to the CEO and granted oversight over major strategic decisions.

Her appointment caps a tumultuous year at Yahoo. In May, Scott Thompson resigned as CEO after less than 6 months on the job as a controversy flared up over his academic credentials.

Thompson replaced the controversial and occasionally foul-mouthed Carol Bartz, fired in September after failing to revitalize Yahoo.

"She's going to bring in a different perspective. It's pretty clear Yahoo needs a new direction and really a new vision," said Paul Buchheit, a Google engineer who helped create Gmail and now a partner at startup-incubator Y-Combinator.

Yahoo had been widely expected to go with Levinsohn, who in his few months at the helm tried to push a strategy of forging media partnerships to beef up the company's online content.

Mayer told Reuters Yahoo can excel as both a media and tech company: "There's a very uninteresting debate happening around Yahoo between technology and media and it doesn't really make sense to me. Because you look at most major technology companies, media is a big part of its business."

She said it was too soon to talk about restructuring, but was "sensitive to the fact that there has been a lot of change recently at Yahoo, so I don't want to make unnecessary changes."

LEVINSOHN'S FUTURE

Still, given her relative inexperience in media, observers are keen to see whether Mayer keeps an executive team that includes Mickie Rosen and Michael Barrett -- two ex-News Corp executives installed by Levinsohn just months ago -- and of course, Levinsohn himself.

"The great products at Yahoo are still, in the main, media products," said John Battelle, founder of Federated Media Publishing.

Sources have said that Levinsohn was committed to building out Yahoo's own video programming and striking more syndication deals in pursuit of ads that command higher prices.

During his months-long tenure, Levinsohn ended a patent dispute with Facebook and signed the social network onto a partnership. Days after his appointment, he ended a fractious episode in Yahoo's history by sealing a deal to sell as much as half of its stake in China's Alibaba, netting some $7.1 billion.

But the board may not have endorsed his media-focused, long-term plan to turn the ship around.

"I just think it was uninspired," one source said on Monday, referring to Levinsohn's strategy.

A second source close to the situation said Mayer would try to get Levinsohn to stay with the company.

"He's not happy but he's also not shocked given how the process had been dragging out," another source close to the company told Reuters.

"Whether Ross stays or not depends on the chemistry with Mayer and the commitment the company is willing to make to media. He won't lack for opportunities."

LEADING WOMAN

Mayer joins Yahoo as something of a celebrity, having already established herself as one of Silicon Valley's leading women. In April, Wal-Mart Stores Inc nominated Mayer to its board of directors. One Google insider described Mayer as being very intense and "intellectually impressive", though she could sometimes ruffle feathers.

"She does very little on an emotional, gut-level feel and lets the numbers speak for themselves," said the insider, who worked for years with Mayer. "She can be difficult, and she can be stubborn, particularly when she has the data to support the facts of her argument."

A self-described "geek" with a Masters in computer science from Stanford, Mayer has frequently championed bringing more women into tech.

But nor has she been shy about discussing her sense of style - and her love for all things Oscar de la Renta.

Mayer is known for hosting parties -- from intimate literary salons in her Four Seasons penthouse in San Francisco to Christmas bashes at her home in Silicon Valley near the Googleplex -- and is a regular on society pages, especially after her wedding to real estate investor Zachary Bogue in 2009.

In 2010, the couple hosted a $30,000-a-plate fundraiser dinner for President Obama at Mayer's Palo Alto home. And late last year, Mayer became an Internet meme after she was filmed dancing to an MC Hammer beat in a YouTube video made to support San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee's election effort.
