Biggest Bankruptcies: From Famous Names to Iconic Companies ...

Our friends at Who Knew? on Yahoo! News are looking into bankruptcies this week. There?s a lot there to talk about?

Today Judge Steven Rhodes will begin the process of setting a series of hearings and deadlines that will eventually decide whether Detroit can file for bankruptcy. This could take months?

USA Today says the following issues are on his radar:

? The status of Detroit?s negotiations with creditors.

? Detroit?s request for the approval of an agreement that would allow the city to capture a larger portion of casino tax revenue without placing one-third in a reserve account to protect its insurer.

? The city?s request for a committee to represent retirees.

? The possible appointment of a mediator to help speed up negotiations between the city and creditors.

? A request for a fee examiner to monitor the money Detroit is paying its lawyers and financial advisers.

For weeks, The Daily Ticker?s been talking to experts about Detroit and the potential fallout from an $ 18 billion-plus bankruptcy.

Meredith Whitney, founder of Meredith Whitney Advisory Group LLC, told us: ?It will galvanize other municipalities to either get their act together or follow Detroit?s lead.?

Heidi Ewing, a Michigan native and co-director of ?Detropia,? a documentary that gives an unvarnished look into Detroit?s political dysfunction and financial decay, expects the city to get worse before it gets better.

?Detroit is on its knees?people were thinking Detroit was already at the bottom? it?s very possible city services will be cut back even further. Those people who have chosen to stay in Detroit or couldn?t leave will bare the brunt of this bankruptcy.?

New Iranian president vows support for Assad

BEIRUT (AP) ? Iran's new president expressed his country's support to Syria's embattled leader Bashar Assad's regime Sunday, saying no force in the world will be able to shake their decades-old alliance.

Hasan Rouhani's comments came as Syrian troops and rebels fought some of the fiercest battles in the mountains of the coastal province of Latakia, an Assad stronghold.

Syria's state-run news agency SANA said Rouhani made the comments during a meeting in the Iranian capital of Tehran on Sunday with Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi.

Syria has been Tehran's strongest ally in the Arab world since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iran has been one of Assad's strongest backers since Syria's crisis began. Tehran is believed to have supplied Assad's government with billions of dollars since the country's crisis began in March 2011. Iran-supported Hezbollah also has sent fighters into Syria to bolster an offensive by Assad forces.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran aims to strengthen its relations with Syria and will stand by it in facing all challenges," SANA quoted Rouhani as saying in a report from Tehran. "The deep, strategic and historic relations between the people of Syria and Iran ... will not be shaken by any force in the world."

Rouhani was elected in June and was endorsed by the country's supreme leader on Saturday, allowing him to begin acting as president. He was sworn in Sunday.

Rouhani condemned foreign intervention in Syria, saying that the Arab country is passing through a "failed attempt" to strike at the "axis of resistance and rejection to Zionist-American plans in the region," SANA quoted him as saying.

Damascus and Tehran reject the idea that there is an uprising in Syria and say the country is being subjected to an Israeli-American conspiracy because of its support to militant groups such as Lebanon's Hezbollah.

SANA quoted Rouhani as saying that Syria will come out of this war "victorious."

Al-Halqi said the Syrian people will "not forget friends who stood by their side during times of difficulties," SANA reported.

More than 100,000 people have been killed since the uprising against the Assad family's four-decade rule began in March 2011. The revolt later escalated into a civil war, which has uprooted millions of people from their homes.

Also Sunday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the clashes in the Jabal al-Akrad region in Latakia province began around dawn when rebels attacked government forces' posts. It said both sides used tanks, artilleries and mortars in the fighting, while government warplanes took part in the battles.

Although much of Latakia has been under the firm control of Assad's forces, some mountainous regions such as Jabal al-Akrad and Jabal al-Turkomen have witnessed fighting because they are close to rebel-held areas.

The observatory said 12 rebels, including foreign fighters, were killed in the fighting, as well as 19 troops and pro-government gunmen. Dozens were wounded as well, it said.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said at least eight people were killed in the fighting in Latakia province. It added that rebels fired Russian-made Grad rockets at government positions.

Church remembers Bristol Township mom, sons, who were killed in crash

If one were to summarize the final chapter of the Tisdale family, it would be a tale about dreams so close to being realized before tragedy struck.

The Bristol Township family was fractured forever Friday when their vehicle collided with a tractor trailer allegedly making an illegal U-turn on Route 1 in Lawrence Township, N.J.

Killed were Jamella Tisdale and her sons, 3-month-old Jaden and 9-year-old Jaevon. The infant's father, Shaqwan, and Jamella's 8-year-old daughter, Mellady Durante, survived but were hospitalized.

On Sunday, the family was remembered at Spotlight Deliverance Temple in Bristol, where the Tisdales regularly worshiped.

"Shaqwan was just coming out with a CD and he was headed to a church in Trenton for a CD release service," said fellow congregant Vincent Washington. "He never made it. They were a beautiful family; things were working out for them."

Jamella Tisdale had just had her own little miracle?? the successful delivery of Jaden?? as the family was about to give up hope, said the Rev. Philip Jackson, pastor of Spotlight Deliverance Temple.

During his sermon, Jackson recalled Jamella's heartbreaking appeal to him following a miscarriage five years ago, when she asked, "Where is God?" But the congregation continued to pray until finally, a joyful Jamella told Jackson that she was pregnant.

"I have no answer for you" as to why all those lives were taken, Jackson told his congregation. "I know we have to accept what God allows. We have to trust in the Lord. But this is the time for all of our families to embrace one another."

Several worshipers bowed their heads in sorrow, but, in a demonstration of hope, also stood and raised arms, and rejoiced in what Bishop Frank T. Stephens Sr. called the presence of God.

"We remember that Jesus wept when Lazarus died. That was the human side of him. But let us continue to support one another. Let us now love as never before," Stephens said.

He also asked his flock to continue to pray for the survivors of the accident, and to thank God for life.

Washington said that the church is planning to set up a trust fund for the family. Details on how and where to contribute will be available in the next few days.

The family lived in Bloomsdale, just around the corner from Deborah Tiller, who is also a church member.

"That family was such a blessing to us," Tiller said." Shaqwan loved to sing. They'd been waiting so anxiously for this new baby to be born. When I think about it, I just keep crying."

"They are very nice. They are very respectful," said Tiffany, a neighbor of the Tisdales who just wanted to give her first name. "I am just so sorry for what happened. It is very sad."

94% Fruitvale Station

All Critics (127) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (119) | Rotten (8)

It's hard not to watch Fruitvale Station with a coiled dread... Yet, Coogler's greatest achievement may be in reminding us that Grant was a work in progress with people who loved him in spite of his flaws and because of his hopes.

We feel the death on the platform so acutely not because it's a stupid act of randomness, but hardly untypical racist violence, but because we've come to love this man.

Michael B. Jordan (The Wire and Friday Night Lights) plays Oscar with the heart and compelling charm required to make us feel close to him.

It's a story of one young man's tragedy, a story that resonates with so many other tragedies. Oscar Grant wasn't some mere symbol; this film makes him flesh and, unfortunately, blood.

An eloquent memorial for a man who barely experienced life, and a haunting reminder of how quickly it can be lost.

Some of this narrative feels cliched, but Coogler and his actors make it work by leaning toward understatement.

This dramatic story is told in a fair and balanced way, supplemented with excellent acting.

A powerful acknowledgement of existence

It's funny how the bloated, overly lengthy studio blockbusters have far less impact than 90 minutes of a relatively brief, CGI-free 'little' movie such as 'Fruitvale Station.'

The slow first hour is more than compensated for by the half hour climax that leaves one in tears.

As Grant, Michael B. Jordan's stunning good looks and immaculately restrained acting affects even those who don't want to be manipulated-who want to watch this story with unfogged eyes.

Without emotion-tweaking music or too much fictional streamlining and highlighting, he captures a sense of the random and pointless horror of a young man shot in the back while laying on his stomach

...writer-director Ryan Coogler and his actors do such a good job the film is consistently compelling despite its predestined finale.

after seeing Fruitvale Station you should come away with the impulse to muse on the life behind the next tragic homicide in the news that sparks debate ...

The film is both personal and universal. Jordan can be so touching, and his intimidating ferocity is palpable. This is an important picture with a breakout performance.

Fruitvale Station's arrival in theaters corresponds with the outcry over the Trayvon Martin case. But Fruitvale did not need added relevancy to be remarkable.

Fruitvale Station is a heart-rending stop; just remember that the line doesn't end there.

Was Oscar Grant going to turn his life around? We'll never know because of a pointless act of violence.

Coogler's take quietly serves to show Grant as a human being, with his flaws and redeeming qualities, and not just as a face in a newspaper obituary.

...a palpably low-key premise that's employed to continuously engrossing effect by first-time writer/director Ryan Coogler...

'Fruitvale Station' is a movie people are going to be talking about and it's a conversation you don't want to be left out of.

You wonder if Coogler would have felt freer had Grant somehow lived that night, if the director weren't put in a position where he felt the need to honor the dead by bringing him to dramatic life. But he believes in his ambition.

Many recent movies so cavalierly dispense thousands upon thousands of ammunition rounds, you can sometimes forget the effect that one bullet can have on human life.

A tragically relevant and incredibly important film that deserves all the attention it can get from American audiences.

The 25 best movie comedies of all time

Humor's subjective, to be sure ? but there are some movies that everyone can agree are sterling examples of what can get people rolling in the aisles. From the comedy stylings of the Marx brothers to Peter Sellers playing multiple parts, here are the 25 movies the American Film Institute declared to be the most hilarious of all time.

- Molly Driscoll,?Staff Writer

1. 'Some Like It Hot'

The 1959 film directed by Billy Wilder stars Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as two musicians who are forced to dress as women to hide from mobsters in an all-girls band. Marilyn Monroe co-stars as Sugar Kane, the singer of the band whom they befriend along the way, while Joe E. Brown plays a millionaire who becomes enamored with Lemmon and George Raft portrays the leader of the mobsters.

Various stage versions of the movie, including a musical version titled "Sugar" after Monroe's character's first name, have been attempted, and a 2002 version featured Curtis taking on Brown's role.

The tony voice Curtis puts on when pretending to be a young millionaire to romance Sugar is widely acknowledged to be an imitation of actor Cary Grant. Lemmon pokes fun at this when his character hears the voice, telling Curtis's character, "Nobody talks like that!"

According to the Daily Mail, the film was shot in black-and-white because the film style was better for Curtis and Lemmon's heavy makeup.
