The device itself features broadly similar specifications to the 'regular' S4 - a 1.9GHz Quad Core CPU, 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM + microSD, LTE connectivity, a 5" 1920x1080 LCD (no AMOLED in this model!) with 'glove touch', Android 4.2.2, an 8 megapixel camera with LED Flash light (more details below), a 2 megapixel front camera - all powered by a 2600mAh battery.
As well as the 8 megapixel rather than 13 megapixel camera - which offers a unique 'Aqua Mode' to increase visual quality and clarity for enhanced underwater images and video - the device is IP67 rated for dust and water ingress. This means that it has a '6' rating for solid particle protection - 'Dust tight - No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact' and a 7 rating for liquid ingress protection - 'Immersion up to 1m - Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1 m of submersion). Tested for 30 minutes'. Pretty good!
The device measures 139.7 x 71.3 x 9.1 mm and tips the scales at 151g, compared to 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm and 130g for the 'regular' S4 - not too much of an increase.
I quite like the design myself (particularly as it's expected to be available in some interesting colours - Urban Grey, Dive Blue and Orange Flare!) although the front buttons look a bit 'budget'. Hats off to Samsung for getting microSD and a removable battery in there while still retaining the IP rating!
Availability and price are TBC, however Phones4U have already been in touch with the obligatory 'we'll be stocking it!' mail.
Any takers?
