Hurricane Sandy Demolished Rockaway Skatepark - Skate Update

The aftermath of hurricane Sandy is a heart wrecking sight in New York City as billions of dollars worth of properties leveled down and more than 30 lives taken away from their loved ones.

The devastation of hurricane Sandy is not only visible on the floating cars, empty sub-way stations, leveled homes and dark new york streets but also in the amusement parks and the Rockaway Skatepark was not spared with the super hurricane?s wrath.

Rockaway Skatepark is a fixture in the big city and graces the shorelines of Atlantic. It is situated at the Queen?s Rockaway Beach at 91st. It is one of the favorite places for sports activity and the go-to place for skateboarders living near the Atlantic coast and also from skateboarders around the big apple. The recreation park was established in 2004 by the American Ramp Company. It wasn?t the most high-end skate park in New York city but it boasts a 12,300 square foot area for park goers and skateboarders. It is also free and situated near the beach just like the recreation center of the boardwalk in New Jersey which was also damaged by the hurricane.

?Rockaway got wrecked,? 5boro Skateboards founder Steve Rodriguez told ESPN.com.

Rockaway Skatepark is supposed to undergo a major overhauling next year according to city officials and it will feature state-of-the-art facilities. Right now, the park and all other parks and amusement centers in New York is closed for safety reasons and no definite date yet has been released of its reopening schedule.
